Red Lion, Avebury, Wiltshire

When we visited Avebury to see the stones and we had lunch in a pub called Red Lion Inn. It is located on the A361 between Swindon and Devizes and just few minutes walk from the Avebury Stone Circle which is known as one of the Worlds Heritage Site and just half a mile away from the National Trust Museum. Very convenient location if you’re on the place looking for something to eat, unwind relax and wait for friends and family while looking round the old stones and museum.

It was nearly dinner time and the pub starts to get full packed by locals and tourists. We luckily found a table inside the pub next to an 86 feet well that is around 400 years old. They are the only inn in the whole world positioned with inn a stone circle. You need to go to the bar/till to order the food and of course pay after ordering so my boyfriend done that and brought back some beer with him for the two of us. I ordered Cheese and Bacon Burger for £8.59 and he had platter of veggies, an apple, brown bread, ham, some dips and a pie.

The service was quite slow but understandable as it was around dinner time and lots of orders are ahead of us so we just enjoyed our drink, waited for our food and of course had a little chat. Not that long, the food arrived and as always, we munched it because we are really starving and finished it all with no crumbs of bread or leftovers in the dish.

It was a nice experience for me to try to dine in a traditional Old English inns/pub. It was a memorable day not just I had a tour around one of the worlds heritage sites but also a privilege to try an English food in a very old well-known pub chain in England.

  1. Looks like a great place to visit. And don’t worry, walking a healthy practice to support campaign on global warming – you don’t burn gas with your car.

  2. The cheese and bacon burger looks so tasty! And I love that last photo of the Red Lion Pub.. :) Wish I can visit England in the future.

  3. Yes! That was the highlight of the pub. Each tourist that dine or visits the pub always ended up in this well taking pictures and reading its history. Was my first time to see a pub with a well as we always visit pubs in England every time we go on a holiday.

  4. England…aaaah, I long to be in this place!!! <3

But anyway, this pub looks really interesting–with that 86feet well alone! Ha! XD And the servings look really generous. Now I'm even more jealous. haha! Kidding.

  5. I personally prefer pubs over fine restaurants. I like being comfortable and loose while eating eh. And the prices are more friendly :)

    Love your travel posts!!! <3

  6. Yes, very unique. They are the only pub/resto in England that has a well indoors. Its a bit scary for me to sit and eat there cos its looks very deep! hehehehehe

  7. wow what if I accidentally dropped my keys there? Oh well ha ha ha that will be the day that a rope and a flashlight will be a very valuable tools. Can you bring me there please? =)) I want to try the food there.
